Rhonda Denney - Chameleon

Chameleon - The Eyes Have It Series 30” x 40” Fiber Art 2017

Price: $3,000

I have always been intrigued by the Chameleon.  With independently movable eyes and color-changing abilities, as well as the unusual pincer-like feet, this odd little reptile character fascinates me.  I wanted to capture the character of this incredible lizard in my fiber art.  The nubby texture of the silk noil fabric took my pigments well, allowing me to create the colorful camouflage representation here.  The stitching helped make each detail pop.

Chameleon was created using my Pigment Patchwork technique with raw-edge appliqué using silk noil fabric with a hand-dyed background fabric, pigments of various kinds, and quilting with monofilament threads to create dimension.

The Eyes Have It Series Statement: Most animals use their sight to survive, either to find food or to avoid becoming food.  Not all animals see the world in the same way and eyes are unique to each species. Animals are constantly alert to the environment around them; their survival depends on that.

Martin Buber said, “An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.”  For this series, I want to focus on the allure and power of different animals and their eyes, be they mammal, bird, reptile or insect, and try to capture it in my fiber art.  To me animal eyes are a large part of their distinctiveness and character, and I love the challenge of recreating that in my art.

Construction: silk and cotton fabric; polyester batting; pigments; cotton, polyester and monofilament threads.
