Description
This fiber piece was created in response to a Cherrywood Fabric Challenge. We were to create a 20” x 20” masterpiece inspired by the works of artist Vincent van Gogh, his story, his artwork and his strong use of color. We were provided with a 4-color fat-quarter set of their hand-dyed fabrics, 3 official VAN GOGH blues and a black. We could use only Cherrywood fabrics on the front and binding of the piece, with embellishments of our choice, using at least 60% of the provided fabrics.
I chose to emphasize Van Gogh’s signature swirls. When I looked at the colors, I was inspired to create a raven flying against a background of swirls. I utilized pigments on the raven to capture the iridescence of his feathers using my Pigment Patchwork technique. I used raw-edge appliqué, pigments of various kinds, and quilting with color threads to create dimension.
Construction: cotton fabrics; polyester batting; pigments; cotton/polyester threads.
Designed (using photos as inspiration), created and stitched by Rhonda Denney.
